BMC Associates Pack Sweet Cases for Foster Kids
Foster kids have claimed a special place in the heart of Bishop-McCann Director of Global Sourcing, Nicole McCoy, ever since she and her family welcomed a little brother from the foster care system. Knowing Bishop-McCann’s “The Just Right Projects” Charitable Division focused on helping youth, she spearheaded the idea to include the Adopt Kansas City Kids Agency, which is part of the Missouri Department of Social Services. Shockingly, when most kids enter into foster care, they only receive two trash bags to hold all of their belongings. Together We Rise (an organization partnering with the Adopt Kansas City Kids Agency), along with other foster care agencies across the country, wants to change that. Bishop-McCann team members saw the opportunity to help.
Associates from all of the BMC office locations set out to decorate and pack “Sweet Cases” for foster kids in Kansas City, Chicago, Minneapolis, and San Francisco. Together We Rise made it easy for each office to donate the cases to their local agency in order to assist foster children.
Staff sat down to pack the blue duffle bags, which included fun items like coloring books and crayons, comforting items like blankets and teddy bears, and necessities like a toothbrush and toothpaste. Then each office donated the decorated cases to their local agency—helping foster children in that specific city.
“Knowing that every city has foster care kids who could benefit from a little extra love, I thought partnering with the Adopt Kansas City Kids Agency would allow all of our offices to not only help children in the community but also introduce the program to our corporate event planners who are regularly called upon to create a team-building or philanthropic component in their meeting planning,” McCoy said. “You know the saying, ‘It takes a village?’ Our industry provides an opportunity for our staff and attendees to be part of many villages, and what a giant impact we can make on society by contributing a bit of time and love at each stop.”
Bishop-McCann associates packed and decorated 100 cases. Staff members across the country agreed that the project not only provided “just the right resources” at “just the right time” but also that it fulfilled the mission of creating a positive response to a critical need. It was a perfect “Just Right Project” for the company.
Tanya Keys, the Agency’s Regional Director, said, “The Sweet Cases are such a comforting sight for children and youth entering care. It’s wonderful for them to instantly have something of their own for their treasures as well as practical personal items. The artistic and whimsical designs are appreciated and always bring a smile to children as they pick out their favorite duffle to match their personality. Thank you for the thoughtful duffle bags filled with necessities and comfort.”
